Coordinators of the Rayne Frog Festival, rescheduled for November 7-9, 2008 are excited to announce that the fantastic musical lineup will remain the same, with all entertainers appearing at the same time on the new dates.
Festival Coordinator Cheryl McCarty says, “I think it’s a rare occurrence that we are able to present the same talented musicians as scheduled on the new dates given how very popular they all are. We were able to work with each one of the entertainers and their commitment to our festival speaks volumes about having made the right, albeit difficult, decision to move the dates.” McCarty goes on to say,”I’m amazed by the level of support and enthusiasm the dates in November has generated! With cooler weather and less mosquitoes, we’re thinking this may be our most successful festival yet!
Once again, festival-goers will be sheltered when the 2008 Rayne Frog Festival opens under the 20,000 sq. ft. pavilion located on the festival grounds just off Interstate 10 in Rayne. The 36th annual festival will be held on the first full weekend of November, November 7-9, 2008.
Festival attendees will find plenty of free parking on the Frog Festival grounds, and a number of spaces for RV campers are available next to the grounds and can be reserved by contacting Rayne City Hall at 337-334-3121.
Mitchell Bros. Carnival opens the festival with family nights at 5:00pm on Wednesday and Thursday, November 5th & 6th, when you can pay one price and ride all you want. No gate admission is charged on those nights. Festival booths and other activities officially begin at 6:00pm on Friday, November 7th, with opening ceremonies on the stage under the pavilion. The carnival will sell bracelets to ride all night for $15.
Gate admission for the weekend is $1.00 for children under 12 years of age. Adult admission prices on Friday is $5.00, Saturday until 3:00pm – $5.00, after 3:00pm – $7.00 and on Sunday – $5.00.
Festival booths on the grounds will offer all types of food including hamburgers, fried frog legs, sandwiches, po-boys, assorted seafoods, funnel cakes, beer, daquiris, soft drinks, lemonade and many more tantalizing tidbits.
Inside the Civic Center, adjacent to the festival grounds, the Frog Festival Arts and Crafts Show will feature booths offering a wide variety of handmade items. The show, hosted by the Rayne Beautification Board, will be open from 10:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday and 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sunday.
The ‘big gig’ features an exciting lineup of musicians that will be entertaining under the pavilion, starting on Friday with Jackie Callier/Ivy Dugas and Cajun Cousins at 7:00pm, sponsored by Chef Roy’s Frog City Cafe Jaryd Lane takes the stage from 8:30pm to 10:00pm and Wayne Toups & ZydeCajun plays from 10:30pm to 12:00midnight.
Booths open at 9:00am on Saturday morning. The popular Diaper Derby, sponsored by the Rayne Jaycees begins at 9:00am, followed by the Project Dance Performance Team under the direction of Nikki Link. Mr. & Miss Tadpole royalty and the Deb and Junior Frog Festival royalty will be introduced at 10:00am. The Rayne Lions Club will stage its Frog Derby Queen’s competition, featuring costumed frogs and frog racing by contestants at 10:30am.
The Frog Festival Golf Tournament will begin at 11:00am at Cajun Pines Golf Club located in Branch.
The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be the Grand Parade, stepping off at 1:00pm from American Legion Drive, traveling up North Adams Avenue and the Boulevard and ending at the festival fairgrounds. Entry fees for the parade are $75.00 for businesses, elected officials and candidates for office and $25.00 for individual entries and non-profit organizations.
Saturday entertainment includes a Jam Session from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, Glenn Jacquneaux & Cajun Friends from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. The evening kicks off with Krossfyre at 6:00pm followed by legendary recording artist, Percy Sledge at 9:00pm. Closing the night’s lineup is favorite Jamie Bergeron & the Kickin’ Cajuns from 11:00pm to 12:30am.
Sunday’s festival activities begin with a Poker Run sponsored by Fezzo’s Seafood, Steakhouse and Oyster Bar. Registration for the event begins at 7:00am at the festival grounds with the run starting at 9:00am.
An outdoor Mass will be celebrated on the fairgrounds at 10:00am with booths opening at 11:00am.
The signature event of the festival, the popular Frog Racing and Jumping contests, open to the public, will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm under the pavilion. Register and rent a frog from the Rayne Jaycees, who co-sponsor the event with the Rayne-Acadian Tribune. The contests are open to all age groups, from young children to adults.
Poker run winners will be announced under the pavilion during the afternoon’s entertainment by Primetime, who are performing from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and the Rayne Frog Festival will reach its conclusion on Sunday at 4:00pm.
