Fenroy, Desormeaux honored by Sun Belt

NEW ORLEANS — After a record breaking career UL’s Tyrell Fenroy earned yet another honor today as the senior running back was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year to highlight the 2008 All-Sun Belt Conference Football Team.

A Laplace native, Fenroy rewrote numerous rushing records for UL and the Sun Belt Conference. Fenroy became only the seventh player in NCAA history with four 1,000-yard rushing seasons and he shattered the Sun Belt records for career rushing yards and career rushing touchdowns. He was one of 10 semifinalists for the prestigious Doak Walker Award and was named Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week after his 297-yard three touchdown performance against ULM.

Joining Fenroy on the list of individual award winners is Ragin’ Cajun quarterback Michael Desormeaux, who was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year. A dual-threat quarterback, Desormeaux rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season while also passing for nearly 1,900 yards. Under his guidance the Cajuns topped the Sun Belt in rushing offense, scoring offense, and passing efficiency.

With Fenroy and Desormeaux on the first team offense are offensive linemen Chris Fisher and Brad Bustle, while wide receiver Jason Chery is a second-team offensive pick. Chery also made the team as a second team kick return specialist. Defensive back Derik Keyes was named to the Sun Belt second team defense. Honorable mention Cajuns are offensive linemen Jonathan Decoster and Antwyne Zanders.

Arkansas State’s Alex Carrington was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, Florida International’s T.Y. Hilton was named the league’s Freshman of the year, Troy’s Levi Brown was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year and Troy’s Larry Blakeney was named Coach of the Year for guiding the Trojans to the league title and New Orleans Bowl berth.
